We had to replace our doorbell button the other day. That got me thinking about doorbells in general.
What I really dislike about doorbells is sometimes the house is dead silent and someone rings the doorbell and it just about gives me a heart attack because it is so loud. Other times we might have the TV blaring and the pizza delivery man rings the bell and we cannot hear it because it is not loud enough. The volume is rarely right.
So I thought it would be cool if someone would make a doorbell that would first sample the room’s background noise level before it rang, then made the ding-dong sound at a volume appropriate for the room. That would eliminate the heart attacks and the missed pizzas.

I’ve lived in this house for 22 years and we’ve never had a doorbell. But right now, having 2 or 3 yappy dogs in residence is every bit as annoying.
We have an actual door bell.
A literal bell, hanging beside the door that folks ring when they come over.
Or, that we use when we’re calling the field hands to come in for some grub,
I might be able to engineer something for you. But the only condition is, it wouldn’t be a bell but a klaxon.
I too have never lived in a residence with a doorbell. but then again, I tend to ignore everyone unless I know I am expecting a delivery person.
“That would eliminate the heart attacks and the missed pizzas.”
You might want to check with Paula Deen on this, but I think that if you miss the pizza delivery, you eliminate or reduce the risk of heart attack.
We have a door bell here, but the funny thing about that is no one uses it. We also have a door knocker on the front door. They use it instead of the door bell. lol I dont get it.
I’d rather have a doorbell that, instead of ringing a bell, would either dim or flash the overhead lights.
I like doorbells. It was a great warning when I was home alone and touching myself
Erik above is, I think, onto something. I’m sure I read some time ago about doorbells where, should you wish, you can switch it over from sound to a coloured light in whichever room/s you want (obviously, the light bulb has got to be conspicuous enough to notice). Or perhaps I was dreaming about some time in the future……?
there’s probably an app for that.
I am a doorknocker fan rather
Our dog is a quiet dog and never barks, but doorbells get her going. Even ones on TV.
How do people with less-than-good hearing manage? I only ask.
they actually have doorbells for the deaf, they do hook up to lights, its a plug and play kind of thing. Its pretty cool. I know cause I dated a deaf guy.
I wouldn’t worry Cubby. Eventually your home computer system will tell you someone is approaching and who that person is and send you a video link of their progression toward the house. It won’t help you right now, but I bet we’ll see it before we are gone.
